History 'A Sheep Dip' GuideThe Gilmore Chapel was built in 1847 as part of a larger development with a chapel and caretakers lodge. The school building was 'L' shaped and was used as a school and sunday school for the Primitive Methodists in Stanhope
The Chapel and Sunday school land was held in trust by local members who took a mortgage out for £25 which was about £60,000 in today's money. Later the church took out a substantial mortgage for £330 which would be about £400k today. Like all communities at the end of the second great war many people were killed including some of the trustees of the Chapel and Schools - see 1945 changes to trustee (to be uploaded) In 1967 the building was sold to private developers for £1,968 who divided the property into two sets of flats at the rear of the school building in the 1990. The main school building was left and went derelict over the last 40 years. The last owner had completed restoration works to the west wall and the roof during late 2000 |
